The Language of Thought

' The problems of inventing a new language are staggering............
The interest in language so dominant in modern art is not an interest in semantics per se:
it is a continual interest in making language ( whatever the medium )
to fit our real feelings better...........'

Robert Motherwell 1965.

When I am working I always have a sheet of paper at hand to test out colours, marks and scribbles, how to harness this I don't know!!

  1. Love the Robert Motherwell quote Sandra.
The marks that you have made are lovely.
I sometimes find random marks made when I am not really trying can be more interesting than marks that I have made more consciously. These and marks like the ones you have made above could be used for future reference (although reproducing the same mark again is often difficult)or for using as small paintings.
    Happy New Year!!

    1. This is exactly how I feel too Jacqui but not sure how to transfer these random marks onto a larger canvas, every time I try it doesnt quite work.
Happy New Year to you too x

  2. Not sure if this helps but two things that I have discovered - one is about scale and some images that I have made look better in one scale and don't suit being tampered with- e.g. these blind embossings are A5 and I tried scaling them up to A4 (twice the size and they did not have the same effect). http://jacquidodds.blogspot.co.uk/2012/11/geological-traces-shrewsbury-museum-and.html

The same thing happened with another of my images - it did not suit being scaled up. Although some other ones of mine are fine.

Two - The marks I make suit paper or board better than canvas.

    1. Thanks for that Jacqui, scale is definitely something that I find can be a problem. I hadn't really considered that the marks I make are better suited to paper, so that is certainly something to think about.

  6. Your colours make beautiful 'words'. You should bind your 'thought' parchments into a book as they do tell a story.
ps there was a good play on radio 4 today about an artist drawing her nightmare - it was pretty creepy as she didnt have control over what she was drawing. Im afraid i didnt hear all of it so I dont know what it was called.

    2. Well done for finding it as I just realised I forgot to give you a title or a time it was on!

Thanks to you I have just been back at the Turner exhibition and armed with my new knowledge I can see new things in his work and actually the signs of abstract expressionism latterly do show through actually but I had never picked up on it before so big thank you there. I can also see why you like his work so much as your delicate washes create incredible moods which as I have said before genuinely make my hair stand on end. I came out the exhibition to amazing Turner esk big skies - washed with beautiful Northern wintery colours and a very low sun catching the few small dark clouds, really lovely.

      Have a great weekend. x
